Every year during homecoming week, we have an event called “Day of Fun.” The school day is fun because we are on an early dismissal schedule. After fifth period, we go down to the track instead of going home. This is where the fun takes place.
The powder puff game is the main event of the day. This is when female students participate in a flag football tournament among the different grade levels at SAHS. It is hosted in the center of the track on the soccer field.
This year, Fun Day fell on a rainy day, leaving the grass and track slick. However, this did not affect the powder puff players or the school’s excitement. In regard to the students participating in powder puff, the freshmen and sophomores were combined into one team. Since this left three teams in a two-round tournament, a group of female teachers formed a teacher team, so everyone could play two games. In the first round of the tournament, the sophomore/freshman team lost to the seniors by two points. The teacher team lost to the juniors. In the championship game, the juniors were victorious and took first place in the tournament.
If you preferred to not watch the game, there were other activities to keep students entertained. There was karaoke for anyone who wanted to serenade the crowd with their (sometimes) amazing voices. There were also inflatables for putt-putt golf and soccer. Few students had success with the golf inflatable, but that made it more fun for everybody.
Another attraction of Fun Day was the opportunity for school organizations to conduct fundraisers. The band sold necklaces and chocolate. Student council and the cheerleading team sold food and drinks.
Overall, this year’s Fun Day was a success. Whether you were playing or watching powder puff, singing karaoke, playing on the inflatables, or walking the track with your friends, everybody had an amazing day and did not let the weather dampen their fun.
